Steam Deck as a living room PC 3 Aug 2025

It still tickles me how successful the Steam Deck has been after the failure of Steam Machines back in 2015

I opted to pre-order the most basic model when they were first announced. When it came time to decide whether to pay the remaining balance I had to decide if I wanted to make that investment or perhaps just buy it to then sell on eBay.

Thankfully I opted to buy it to enjoy for myself which is a decision I'm very glad I made.

Although I initially enjoyed it in it's stock portable form, after a few months I was really keen to use it with my living TV as a replacement for my aging PS4.

Unfortunately whenever I attempted to use it with my PS4 controllers they just didn't work reliability when I got further than a meter or two away from the Deck.

In the end I invested in a 2.4GHz 8BitDo Ultimate controller which has functioned flawlessly for me ever since. Although sadly not before swapping out my 3rd party dock for an official one in the hope it would resolve the bluetooth issue (it didn't!)

A lessor used, but very important set of peripherals has been the set of Logitech Pebble keyboard and mouse I also purchased.

Although the controller tends to be the primary input device used by most games, there's a few which really need the mouse for the best experience.

Kaizen: A Factory Story is one of these

I'm not sure why, but using a computer mouse to control what's being shown on my TV always gives me a real kick!

It's really helped by how seamless the experience is using it with my Steam Deck. I just need to turn the mouse on and I can start using it in my game.

Having the keyboard as well is very useful, such as when I play FTL and need some hotkeys to quickly react to sudden and evolving situations
